i’m sure scott and elisabeth will chime in at some station within the next week with their favorite and not-so-favorite moments from this year’s san diego mirthful con, and so i reason i’d get the ball rolling with something a little particular. welcome to our first annual comic con awards! catchy self-explanatory; we hand out awards in several different covering-akin categories, offer up an explanation for our choice and then attend a swanky, imaginary after party. here goes …most buzzed-about footagetron 2 — alibi of all the footage that screened during comic con, it was that brass farthing tron 2 teaser thrown in during the escape to witch mountain panel that took everyone by surprise. in all events, after it screened, it was all anyone was talking about — so much so that it was the commencement question three different complete strangers asked me whilst talking about the con: “did you see the tron 2 footage? how awesome was that?” (shhh … leaked footage)biggest surprisefanboys — when it takes two years for a veil to make the grade in theaters, that’s usually not a good seal of things to come. when, throughout those two years, the film’s head is replaced by some hack, the configure is re-written to wipe out a crucial thread element and thousands of fans position a boycott of the weinstein co. (said film’s distributor) … ooze, that can’t be a convincing thing either. so then it was definitely a big surprise to watch the final write of fanboys at comic con and walk away with superhuman smiles on our faces. from my mini-review: “i will predict, granted, that this is not just a film for take the lead wars fans — it’s a film appropriate for any geeky dude or dudette who’s ever horsed all with their friends, gone on a nutty jeopardize and inserted random cinema quotes into every other line of dialogue.” the screen should a mark on theaters on september 19th (hopefully in a wide release). read scott’s greatest review.

Obama Talks about Landstuhl; McCain Camp Responds

Obama never explains–perhaps he was never asked–why he just didn’t choose to leave his advisers on the plane while he visited with wounded U.S. troops:

You know, the staff was working this, so I don’t know each and every detail. But here’s what I understand happened. We had scheduled to go. We had no problem at all in leaving — we always leave press and staff out. …

I was going to be accompanied by one of my advisers, a former military officer, and we got notice that he would be treated as a campaign person, and it would therefore be perceived as political because he had endorsed my candidacy, but he wasn’t on the senate staff. That triggered, then, a concern that maybe our visit was going to be perceived as political.

Watch it:

The McCain campaign hits Obama with a statement from retired Lt. Colonel Joe Repya:

The most solemn duty of a commander in chief is to fulfill his responsibility to the men and women who serve this country in uniform. Barack Obama had scheduled a visit with wounded American troops who have served with honor and distinction in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he broke that commitment, instead flitting from one European capital to the next. Several explanations were offered, none was convincing and each was at odds with the statements of American military leaders in Germany and Washington. For a young man so apt at playing president, Barack Obama badly misjudged the important demands of the office he seeks. Visits with world leaders and speeches to cheering Europeans shouldn’t be a substitute for comforting injured American heroes.

‘Dark Knight’ Breaks So Many Numbers Records, Calculators Around The World Are In Pain; Nerds Celebrate, Inherit The Earth

god,the numbers regatta, the numbers game! not much to anyone’s surprise (though we didn’t quite think it would break the $130 in the know average mark), ‘dark knight’ shattered all kinds of records this weekend including delightful in a $155 million at the box-position breaking the all-time record in days held by “spider-man 3″ of $151 mil. although nikki finke is reporting that some studios are having issues with warner bros. ticket reporting, which is pause for some house considering wb just got busted for juking the stats ignore in may when they wanted “speed racer” to look less like a disaster (and hoped it would at least outgross a stupid ashton kutcher romcom which it failed to do). though some comic- book inclined sites are dismissing finke as they don’t long for to acknowledge anything other than rah, rah, rah, batman warmongering.we should say we don’t embark the groupie location super vested in the ‘dark knight’s prosperity and totalitarian take over of the appear mores landscape. yeah, we predisposed to liking indisputable films too, but we don’t actively poke for them to grace number one or go gangbusters. we just wish for good films to be continued to be cranked unlit, and we want them to make enough money so whoever directed them gets enough to make another movie, but the fanboy movie sites are a little much and current on the other side of the crown with the self-interest in depicting this film as the most popular dim of all time and the best film a day released. so it’s currently ranked #1 on imdb right in these times. congratulations? and? that means what literally? it couldn’t by any chance have possibly shot up there just now cause it just came out now could it? it couldn’t possibly go further down that ladder in the following weeks age could it? (like it matters regardless). maybe it’s the difference between fans and reporters.we liked “the dark knight” as much as the next guy, but mould all things that get too loud and noisy, they start to happen to obnoxious and we could booth to never perceive about this video destined for a hardly weeks. that said, their liking be further pieces to cancel we’re sure. it’s hard to give someone the brush-off the zeitgeist, and it would be kidney of irresponsible to do so, but c’mon, give us a little breather please. this reminds us that we silently haven’t eventually seen “spider-gyves 3″ and frankly, we still maintain scrap participation in doing so. the experience of ’sp2′ was fun and flush with elating at times to be sure, but that film doesn’t even hold have the gravitas of a ownership papers weight.the playlist - the over spot where movies and music suitable.

Moving Towards Each Others: More on NYT vs WSJ

Yesterday we mentioned about the war of words between NYT’s digital side and WSJ.com….now today some more interesting new projects scheduled to go live at NYTimes.com this fall, as mentioned in this AdAge story. Among them, Times Extra, which will be links to stories from NYT competitors, and will even occupy space on NYTimes.com homepage, a huge leap for the paper’s rather cloistered journalistic attitude of lore. From the sound of it, looks like they will modify BlogRunner, which currently only runs on NYT’s tech page online, to run across the site. NYT bought BlogRunner two years ago.

Then, the site will expand into WSJ territory att he same time WSJ is expanding into more general news and taking on NYT: it will expand its business coverage, and develop vertical sections on subjects including the economy, energy, small business, personal finance and enterprise technology. The model is DealBook, the popular deals site/blog/newsletter developed by Andrew Ross Sorkin and his team. Like DealBook, each section will have original reporting and commentary from a dedicated staffer, news aggregated from elsewhere, relevant tools, e-mail newsletters, mobile applications and more, the story says. Of course, the competition for NYT or even WSJ is not just each other, but plenty of other sources, both traditional and online-only. But the two have more resources and scale than most others to back these efforts

Heroic troops repel at least 100 in Afghan fight

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Insurgents who squared off with U.S. soldiers in a major battle in eastern Afghanistan overran a military observation point just outside a coalition outpost, but failed to take the base, a U.S. military official told CNN.

U.S.-led coalition, Afghan and NATO officials were attempting to piece together details about the confrontation which occurred Sunday in Kunar province, a location close to the Pakistan border.

"It was heroic fighting," said another official, NATO spokesman Mark Laity, describing the U.S.-led troop performance.

"They wanted to overrun that base," he added, referring to the militants. "They failed."

The fighting left nine U.S. soldiers dead and 15 wounded. It marked the most fatalities in an attack on U.S. troops in Afghanistan in three years. An Afghan official estimated that 100 militants died or were wounded in the fighting.

A U.S. official told CNN that as many as 200 insurgents were involved in the strike, which NATO said occurred at an outpost in Dara-I-Pech. However, other officials could not put a figure on the number of insurgent casualties at this time.

The official said militants didn’t get into the outpost but they did overrun a small U.S.-led observation point outside the base, where it is believed most of the American and Afghan fatalities and injuries occurred.

"What there was was a combat outpost had a major attack on it by a large group of insurgents. They had infiltrated a neighboring village and they fired on the base from that village and then they attacked the base itself."

He said severe fighting followed, resulting in the American casualties and the wounding of four Afghan service members.

"They attempted to break into that base. They did make some penetration. But overall they were repelled and they took very heavy casualties themselves," Laity said.

He indicated that the penetration or breach that media reports about the strike referred to was the attack on the observation post.

"We brought in air power to stabilize the situation in a fight that then lasted for several hours," he said.

There have been occasional strikes on coalition bases in recent months — Laity noted that the practice "is quite common."

"This was a larger-scale attack than normal," he said, but added, "This was not a new tactic. They usually get defeated. We are very, very sad that we lost some people but again, their attempt to take that base failed."

New Soul Calibur VI Character Revealed: Algol

algolmain.jpg

Namco has a fresh batch of Soul Calibur screens for us featuring a new character, Algol. Algol is the new “big boss” of the Soul Calibur universe and was once the king of an ancient civilization. According to character designer Hideo Yoshie, he is the strongest SC character ever made. Make the jump to check out a full description of the new character by Yoshie himself.

sc4_pub_ss_algol_002.jpgsc4_pub_ss_algol_astaroth_001.jpgsc4_pub_ss_algol_ivy_001.jpgsc4_pub_ss_algol_voldo_002.jpg we aimed to make a nut that is the “king” of an ultra ancient civilization and a quality that obviously proves the setting of being the strongest nut ever in sc series.

So, he’s wearing a costume from the ancient kingdom that isn’t recorded in history, and it was really difficult and troublesome to make the design of his costume as so just by looking at it. The final motif of the amour ended up being the “bird,” but there were many other ideas like the lion, cobra, dinosaur and more. I believe the design combined dynamism and splendor, and is very cool.

Duvernay oil

His right hand glows red and his left hand glows blue because he holds the Soul Edge in his right and the Soul Calibur in his left.

Also he has 10 kinds of weapons built in his body and shows a variety of fights never seen before, including flying in the air and sitting in the throne.

I want people to have fun by his buzzard actions.

There was an idea for an additional option which he causes an off-site brawl with a pipe chair instead of the throne, but we were not able to put the idea in the game this time.

By the way, the Algol that shows up in the opening demo is Algol when he was still a human.. That’s why his hair has a different color from within the game. There are some more detailed differences, so please go on and find more differences on him for fun through the game.

IndyMac’s costly failure

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — In what could turn out to be the most expensive bank failure ever, troubled mortgage lender IndyMac Bancorp Inc. was taken over by federal regulators on Friday.

The operations of the Pasadena, Calif.-based thrift - once one of the nation’s largest home lenders - were shut down at 3 p.m. PDT by the Office of Thrift Supervision and transferred to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

About 95% of the $19 billion in deposits in the bank are insured, but that leaves $1 billion that was not covered by FDIC guarantees. According to the agency, 10,000 IndyMac customers could lose as much as half of that amount, or $500 million. The agency says the failure will cost the Deposit Insurance Fund between $4 billion and $8 billion, based on preliminary estimates.

"This will certainly be a costly failure. Whether it’s the costliest, we just don’t know at this point," FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair said on a conference call late Friday night. The failure could also affect premiums paid by all banks for deposit insurance, she added.

The closure of IndyMac capped a dramatic day that offered a stark reminder that the credit crisis is not abating. An investor panic sent shares of mortgage finance giants Fannie (FNM, Fortune 500) Mae and Freddie (FRE, Fortune 500) Mac on a wild ride and fueled speculation of a government rescue.

How IndyMac rose in the boom

IndyMac grew rapidly during the real estate and home building boom. Its specialty was so-called Alt-A loans, those for which home buyers were asked to produce little or no evidence of income or assets other than the house they were buying.

While home prices climbed, Alt-A loans posed few problems for IndyMac. If a buyer wasn’t able to afford his payments, the bank got title to a home worth more than the amount owed. The bank was also able to find investors eager to buy pools of those mortgages that had been pulled together into securities backed by the future payments.

But when the housing bubble burst and prices began to fall, losses at IndyMac began to rise. Investors ran away from the mortgage-backed securities, leaving the bank to suffer the loan losses itself and without the funding it needed to make new, safer loans.

Most of IndyMac’s employees and executives will be asked to stay on, although the problems at IndyMac had caused it to cut 3,800 jobs, or more than half of its work force, earlier in the week in an attempt to stay in business.

One executive who will not stay is CEO Michael Perry, who was replaced on an interim basis by a top official of the FDIC.

Bair said that the FDIC will try to sell IndyMac as a complete entity within 90 days.

IndyMac, with assets of $32 billion and deposits of $19 billion, is the fifth bank to fail this year. Between 2005 and 2007, only three banks failed. And in the past 15 years, the FDIC has taken over 127 banks with combined assets of $22 billion, according to FDIC records.

"There will be increased failures, but it will be within range of what we can handle," Bair said. "People should not worry."

Largest collapse since ‘84

IndyMac marks the largest collapse of an FDIC-insured institution since 1984, when Continental Illinois, which had $40 billion in assets, failed, according to FDIC records. The two most expensive banking failures were in 1988, during the nation’s savings and loan crisis: American Savings and Loan Association in California ($5.4 billion) and First Republic Bank in Texas ($4 billion).

The IndyMac failure brought finger pointing along with the federal action.

Miss florida usa 2009

The OTS, which oversaw IndyMac, criticized Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. The OTS claimed that a June 26 letter Schumer wrote to regulators questioning IndyMac’s viability prompted a run on the bank in which customers withdrew more than $1.3 billion prompting a liquidity crisis.

"Although this institution was already in distress, I am troubled by any interference in the regulatory process," said OTS Director John Reich in a statement Friday.

Schumer shot back. He said that lax enforcement by OTS was a primary cause of the problems at IndyMac, as well as those of the nation’s housing market and economy.

"IndyMac’s troubles … were caused by practices that began and persisted over the last several years, not by anything that happened in the last few days," Schumer said. "If OTS had done its job as regulator and not let IndyMac’s poor and loose lending practices continue, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Instead of pointing false fingers of blame, OTS should start doing its job to prevent future IndyMacs."

What now for IndyMac customers?

When a bank shuts down, traditional bank accounts are insured to at least $100,000. Some accounts such as annuities and mutual funds are not insured at all. Individual Retirement Account funds are insured to $250,000.

iPhone 3G mania- line forming a week early in NYC

You couldn’t make this stuff up and it could only happen in New York but engadget is reporting that a line has already started outside the Fifth Avenue Apple Store. The iPhone 3G won’t go on sale for a week but there is photo documented proof that at least 10 people are already in line to guarantee they can pick up the new iPhone next week. We haven’t heard any word on lines forming near podcast co-host Matt Miller’s home in Washington but no one’s heard from him for a few days. He usually waits until the night before to camp out for an iPhone though.
